Union Minister of Road, Transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said that the automotive industry is one of the most important industries in India as it is not only giving maximum employment to the youth of the country but also the biggest contributor of the revenue, as part of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), to the state and Central government.
Talking about the innovations going on in the automotive industry, the Union Minister said India will be the number one manufacturing hub in the next five years.
“We are the largest manufacturer of two and three-wheelers in the world. Also, we are the fourth largest manufacturer of passenger vehicles. This industry contributes 7 per cent of the GDP, particularly in growth and manufacturing GDP contribution of 35 per cent. The employment provided by this industry is 4 crore,” Gadkari said at the second season of the Zee Auto Awards event in the national capital.

Gadkari also emphasised that comfortable public transport can be made more accessible for the poor by introducing double-decker buses. He said that the cost of tickets for public transport can be reduced by around 35 per cent by doing so.
“We expect to reduce the cost of tickets of AC double-decker buses and want to make the services accessible to the economically weaker section as well,” he said.
Talking about green highways, Gadkari said that more green highways will increase tourism in the country.
“Also, we are connecting all religious places with roads. We are making green highways. People can now visit Badrinath, Kedarnath and other such places throughout the year. Every religious centre is going to be connected by roads. We are making 260 ropeway, cable cars and the funicular railway to give a boost to tourism. 30 funicular railways will come up in Ladakh and Leh,” he added
