DDG Shares He Didn’t Realize How Racist America Still Is Until Witnessing The Hate His Girlfriend Halle Bailey Has Received For Being The First Black Woman To Star As ‘The Little Mermaid’: I Thought Martin Luther King Jr. Canceled That Sh*T Out

Despite the hate she’s had to face for her latest role as Ariel in the upcoming “ Little Mermaid” film, it’s very evident that Halle Bailey has a strong support system in her corner.

Rapper DDG, real name Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., is the latest person to speak out in support of Halle Bailey, 22, amid the ongoing backlash she’s been receiving from racist internet trolls. As you may already know by now, earlier this month DDG’s girlfriend, Halle Bailey, set the internet on fire after the first trailer for her upcoming project “The Little Mermaid” was released. Even though the actress has gotten an overwhelming amount of love from fans and supporters, she still deals with harsh comments from racist trolls who believe a Black woman shouldn’t play the part of the fictional mermaid character.

During a recent interview, DDG, 24, was asked how has Halle Bailey been dealing with the negative critics. He answered,

“She be laughing it off [but] they be going a little too hard. But I feel like the people is more attacking the character rather than her, personally.”

After the interview host, DJ Bootleg Kev, said “every once in a while we get reminded just how terribly racist America is,” DDG admitted,

“Yeah, I didn’t know people was this racist – I didn’t know this was a thing.”

He continued,

“I thought this sh*t was gone already, I thought that sh*t was gone! I thought Martin Luther King [Jr.] canceled that sh*t out! This sh*t is crazy, I was like ‘what the f*ck is these n*ggas talking about?’”

He then said that even the haters are going to tune in and watch the film, regardless of their bigoted mindsets.

He added,

“It’s going number one, regardless!”

During his interview, the “I Want You” rapper also shared how he initially shot his shot at Halle and revealed their romance started because he “slid in her DMs.”

He then gave more details and shared,

“She posted a… what song was it – ‘Many Men’ by 50 Cent. She posted a picture and put ‘Many Men.’ Like, one of my fans had told me she was following me and I didn’t know who she was, to be honest. Because I’m not tapped into that world that she was in.”

He continued,

“So then I tapped in [and] I do a bunch of little research. – So then she posted a picture of…herself playing ‘Many Men’ in the background and I was like ‘oh, that’s a nice song choice.’ – Now we’re here.”

DDG isn’t the only celebrity who has come forward to defend Halle. As previously reported, many stars have shared their support for the “Grown-ish” star including Tina Knowles-Lawson, her husband Richard Lawson, and fellow actress Dominique Fishback.

“The Little Mermaid” is set to be released on May 26, 2023.
