Because the liner has two ends — a liquid and a pencil end — she assessed the efficacy of each. As for the liquid end, which she uses to create solid, precise lines and sharp flicks or cat-eyes, she tested for staying power, smoothness of application, and sharpness of the tip. Klein confirms that this eyeliner passes the test with one caveat: “If you have oily lids, I would use a mattifying primer under it.”

As for the pencil side, Klein looks for blendable formulas that stay put once dried. Ideally, they can be used as an eye shadow base and to create darkness at the lash line. “The gel liner is great for creating a base, blending out to add some darkness at the lash line,” she says. “This eyeliner does go on very easily and blends out, but it does not stay put in the waterline.” Because of this, she notes that it is great for created smokey eyes.

How can I use the Valentino Twin Liner Gel for an everyday look?

To create my look, Klein started by using the gel liner at the upper lashes and blended it just up to the crease. Next came a taupe eye shadow which she blended into the crease, and a shimmery light brown onto my lid for light. “I gave the eye a lift by putting the liquid eyeliner very close to the lashline, and to finish it off, I added a lot of mascara and a few individual lashes to the ends,” she says.

You can also use the gel end to create a look for the daytime. The Twin Liner comes in four different combinations. Klein thinks that Black & Marrone (a black liquid liner and deep brown pencil) is ideal for this. “For a daytime look, use the Marrone shade all around the lash line and blend it really well,” she advises. “That way you get the definition without looking like you tried too hard.”

How do I apply the Valentino Twin Liner Gel?

Nogueria notes that the liner is ultra-black with about a “zero percent chance of bleeding.” That being said, we all make mistakes — and Siard provides the following tips. “If you’re still a little unsteady with your liner, you can always clean up any mistakes with micellar water and a brush,” she says. She recommends the Garnier SkinActive All-in-1 Micellar Cleansing Water (the one with the pink cap!) and the Rose and Ben Beauty C30 Brush, which can also be used for concealer.

Klein also offers up some expert tips, such as using the pencil side as an eye shadow base. But the versatile dual ends can also be used to create different looks. “Because of its gel formula, it is very easy to blend and makes the perfect base,” she says of the pencil side. “To create a grungy smokey eye, draw it on your lash line — top and bottom — and then use your finger to smudge it. That way it won’t look too perfect.”
