Woman applying scalp scrub

While most women go into full on exfoliating overdrive with face and body scrubs, essential oils, loofas etc. to scourge away any dead skin cells and give way to softer, rejuvenated and glowing skin from tip to toe.  Little do they realise that they are missing out a pivotal part of the body that requires as much TLC (Treatment, Love and Care) as the rest of it. What Is A Scalp Scrub, You Ask?

Scalp scrubs are natural exfoliative ingredients that are gently massaged onto the scalp that help scourge away any impurities, dead skin cells, product residue, dirt and grime particles.

Scalp Exfoliation? Is It Really Necessary?

Well, for starters, when we use different types of hair care essentials like hair oils, shampoos, conditioners, hair packs, hair gels, mousses etc, or go for different types of hair treatments, there is a lot of leftover product residue, oil and grime particles that stick to the scalp. These unwanted particles do nothing good but block the scalp pores and prevent further hair care essentials to seep into the roots of the hair, thus leading towards dandruff, hair fall, breakage and other scalp issues. Deeper cleansing and exfoliation not only promote the growth of hair but also prevent inflammatory skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis etc. So, if hair care is on your mind, then apart from oiling, shampooing and conditioning include scalp exfoliating in your list too!

Homemade Scalp Scrub Recipes

Sugar And Coconut Oil Scrub

Ingredients:

2 tbsp of honey

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (ACV)

3/4th cup of sugar

1/4th cup of coconut oil

5-10 drops of tea tree oil

Method:

Whip up everything to get a coarse mixture

Part your hair into sections and apply it all over the scalp

Massage the scalp for 5-10 minutes

Rinse and shampoo the hair afterwards

How It Works:

Sugar being a natural exfoliant helps get rid of dirt and grime particles. While tea tree oil has a calming effect on the scalp, and prevents scalp infections, ACV maintains the pH of the scalp. The addition of coconut oil and honey promotes hair growth and moisturises the hair follicles.

Brown Sugar-Oatmeal Scrub

Ingredients:

2 tbsp finely ground oatmeal

2 tbsp hair conditioner

2 tbsp granulated brown sugar

5-10 drops of jojoba oil

Method:

Mix everything to get a rough mixture

Part your hair into sections and apply the scrub all over the scalp

Massage the scalp for 5-10 minutes using your fingertips

Rinse with cool water and shampoo the hair afterwards

How It Works:

The dynamic duo of oatmeal and brown sugar in this scalp scrub not only exfoliates the scalp and boosts blood circulation in the scalp but also provides the much-needed moisture required for growth of new hair. Thanks to the anti-inflammatory properties of jojoba oil, the scrub prevents scalp infections while bestowing a refreshing aroma to the hair strands.

Sea Salt-Coffee Scrub

Ingredients:

2 tbsp coffee powder

2 tbsp Himalayan sea salt

3 tbsp almond oil

2 tsp of lemon juice

Method:

Blend the ingredients in a bowl to get a coarse mixture.

Part your hair into sections and apply the scrub all over the scalp

Massage the scrub onto your scalp for 5-10 minutes

Rinse the hair and use a mild shampoo afterwards

How It Works:

Both coffee and sea salt have powerful exfoliative qualities that work wonders for the scalp by scourging away product residue and impurities while promoting circulation and preventing hair fall. While almond oil nourishes the hair strands from the root and stimulates hair growth, lemon juice prevents dandruff and bequeaths one with a smooth and shiny hair.
